An insight into the life of Scorpion’s Sprintcar Driver: Matthew Leversedge
I just finished my season and it is safe to say it was my best season yet in the National Sprintcar ranks. Major highlights from this season include winning the New Zealand CTRA Title for a second year in a row, winning my first South Island Sprintcar Championship, finishing 3rd overall in the National Sprintcar Series and becoming the first South Islander to win a Sprintcar Feature race at Western Springs, which is the holy grail of open wheel racing in New Zealand.
I am very happy with the way I performed in the 2018/19 season and I put this down to the hard work I put in last year during the off-season with the help of my favorite Scorpion Supplements to help me recover after each grueling session. Although there were several challenges throughout the season, the biggest would have to be when I had a major crash in January. At the time, I thought I was fine and that I would be able to get back to my best within a few days.
Unfortunately, this was not the case, as I suffered a delayed concussion. If you’ve ever had a concussion, you’ll understand how difficult of an injury it is. For a couple of months, I suffered vigorous headaches and it really affected my training & on-track performances. Luckily, I was able to recover in time for my last two events of the season, which was the South Island Championship and the New Zealand CTRA Title.
Sprintcar Racing is an intense sport and not a lot of people realise how much of a toll it can take on not only your body, but your mind as well. For this upcoming off-season I am focusing on adding more lean muscle, which will help my body recover after events. Another focus is my overall fitness, I’d like to think that I am pretty fit, but I am determined to take it to a new level for the 2019/20 season.
My training schedule for the off-season includes three strength sessions a week, which includes all the major muscle groups. It also includes three cardio sessions, which involves an 8km run, a HIIT session (high intensity interval training) and a Circuit group fitness class, which I take at Body Fix gym in Christchurch. Lastly, I finish off my training week with a bodyweight session, I find this as a great way to finish the week as it tests all the muscles I’ve trained earlier in the week.
With an intense schedule like this, it is paramount that I supplement my clean diet. I do this with Scorpion Mass Attack, Scorpion BCAA’s, Scorpion Whey and Scorpion Creatine. Already this off-season, I have put on 3kg of lean muscle, so I am looking forward to continuing this progress for the rest of the off-season!
